Neck dissection is a surgical method for removing lymph nodes in the neck. This significant surgery investigates abnormalities in the lymph nodes, such as cancerous cells, and eliminates them. The extent of lymph node and tissue removal varies based on the cancer’s severity and spread.
Before the surgical procedure, the patient receives general anesthesia. This ensures they remain asleep and pain-free throughout the operation.
There are three types of neck dissection surgery, from which the surgeon selects based on the severity of the patient’s condition.
- Radical neck dissection
This type of neck dissection surgery involves removing all tissues on one side of the neck from the jawbone to the collarbone. In this area, nerves, muscles, major blood vessels, and the salivary gland are also removed.
- Modified radical neck dissection.
This is one of the most frequent surgical procedures, where the surgeon removes all the lymph nodes. In the modified version, less neck tissue is removed compared to a radical neck dissection. Additionally, nerves, blood vessels, and muscles are often preserved during the surgery.
- Selective neck dissection
This type of neck dissection surgery is employed when the cancer has not extensively spread. Selective neck dissection involves the removal of fewer lymph nodes and preserves nerves, muscles, and blood vessels in the patient’s neck.
