Cardiac surgery, also known as Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery (CTVS), involves surgical interventions to treat heart ailments. The renowned team of the Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery Department specializes in diagnosing and treating various complex and difficult-to-treat cardiothoracic disorders with precision. Some of the common heart surgeries performed by the team include:
Aortic Surgery: This procedure is carried out to repair or replace aortic aneurysms and dissections, addressing issues with the aorta, the main artery carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
Aortic Valve Surgery that is performed to repair or replace aortic valve. The surgery can be carried out in the following different ways:
- Endoscopic
- Non-Sternotomy
- MAZE Procedures for AF
Arrhythmia Surgery: This surgical procedure is aimed at correcting irregular heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia, restoring normal heart rhythm and function.
Corrective surgery to fix or treat a genetic heart defect or Congenital heart surgery
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG): Commonly referred to as Heart Bypass surgery or Coronary Bypass surgery, this procedure creates alternative routes for blood to flow to the heart tissue, bypassing narrowed or blocked arteries, which are characteristic of Coronary Artery Disease. During the procedure, a healthy blood vessel (graft) is taken from another area of the patient’s body and placed around the narrowed or blocked area to restore blood flow to the heart. The goal of CABG is to relieve symptoms of coronary artery disease, such as angina, enable the patient to resume a normal lifestyle, and lower the risk of a heart attack or other heart-related problems.
Surgery for heart failure
LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device): This device aids in the pumping function of the heart, helping to circulate blood throughout the body.
Left Ventricular Remodeling/Surgical Ventricular Restoration: This technique aims to restore a more normal shape to the heart following a myocardial infarction (MI), allowing for efficient blood pumping.
Heart Transplant: This surgery is performed to treat end-stage heart failure, a condition where the heart is unable to pump enough oxygenated blood to meet the body’s organ needs.
