Colposcopy Treatment in India

Colposcopy Helps in Detecting Existence of Pre-Cancerous Cells

Colposcopy is a procedure used to examine the cervix. Your doctor uses a colposcope to carry out this procedure. Typically, your doctor will recommend a colposcopy if you have an abnormal Pap test result. If the colposcopy reveals abnormal cell growth, your doctor may collect tissue samples for further testing.

Benefits of Colposcopy

Colposcopy allows a doctor to swiftly detect the presence of pre-cancerous cells or lesions, enabling immediate treatment and improving the chances of recovery. If no pre-cancerous cells are found, an abnormal Pap result may indicate that your body has successfully recovered from an HPV flare. This procedure is highly recommended for the early detection of cancerous growths.

Who needs a colposcopy?

Patients with an abnormal cervical screening report often require a colposcopy. Before performing the colposcopy, your doctor will recommend a routine cervical screening test.

How is the procedure done?

During the procedure, the surgeon inserts a speculum, a tube-shaped tool, into the vagina, which widens the vaginal walls. Using a microscope, the surgeon examines the cervix, with the images displayed on a digital screen. Tissue samples may be taken for biopsy if necessary. Typically lasting 15-20 minutes, the procedure allows you to return home afterward, although you may need to spend a few hours in the hospital to complete the process.

Recovery and Post-Procedure Care

Following colposcopy, your vagina may require 1-2 days to recover. Mild pain may occur, for which the doctor will prescribe painkillers. Additionally, you may experience vaginal bleeding and discharge, which typically subside after a few days. If a biopsy was performed, bleeding and discharge may persist longer. Here are a few instructions to follow:

  • Avoid penetrative sex for up to 4 weeks, and don’t put any tool inside the vagina.
  • Don’t use tampons or menstrual cups, as it may worsen the condition.
  • Avoid heavy physical activities, which may lead to more pain and bleeding.

Still, if you face difficulties, you must consult your doctor immediately.

Risks and Complications

Colposcopy is considered medically safe, with minimal risk involved. However, there is a possibility of developing a vaginal infection, leading to discharge and bleeding. In such cases, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics and painkillers to facilitate recovery. If pain worsens, it’s crucial to promptly consult your doctor. Additionally, pelvic pain may occur, necessitating further treatment, which should also be discussed with your doctor.
