Laryngectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at the partial or complete removal of the larynx, a critical structure housing the vocal cords and facilitating sound production. Additionally, the larynx serves as a conduit linking the nose, mouth, and lungs, while also safeguarding the respiratory system by directing food and liquid towards the esophagus and away from the lungs. Following a laryngectomy, individuals may encounter challenges with breathing, speaking, and swallowing, necessitating adjustments to maintain quality of life.
Benefits of the Laryngectomy Surgery
- Eliminates infected tonsils
- Minimize intake of medication
- Improved quality of living
Procedure
Under general anesthesia, the surgeon initiates the procedure by making an incision on the neck, subsequently extracting either a portion or the entirety of the larynx. Depending on the case, the surgery might entail the extraction of certain lymph nodes and a segment of the pharynx.
Following the laryngeal removal, the surgeon creates an opening in the front of the windpipe, known as a stoma, to accommodate a laryngectomy tube, facilitating breathing post-surgery. Additionally, in certain instances, a tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) procedure may be performed to insert a voice prosthesis. This involves creating a small aperture between the trachea and esophagus, aiding in speech restoration.
Once the necessary procedures are completed, the incisions are meticulously closed using sutures. Subsequently, the patient typically remains hospitalized for a duration of one to two weeks, during which the medical team closely monitors the recovery process.
