Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) in India

Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) is a surgical procedure for removing the uterus and cervix using a laparoscope, a small operating telescope. This minimally invasive surgery is commonly performed to address conditions such as pelvic pain, fibroids, heavy or irregular bleeding, non-cancerous tumors, or early-stage cervical cancer.

Indications for TLH

Patients may need a TLH if they experience:

  • Fibroids
  • Heavy or abnormal periods
  • Pelvic pain
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Early-stage cervical cancer
Pre-Surgery Investigations

Prior to surgery, the doctor will review the patient’s medication intake. Patients are advised to avoid smoking before the procedure.

Surgical Procedure
  1. Anesthesia and Preparation:
    • The surgery is conducted under general anesthesia.
    • A cannula is inserted into the vein to administer fluids and medications.
    • A catheter is placed in the bladder to drain urine.
  2. Surgical Steps:
    • A small abdominal incision (about 2 cm) is made.
    • Gas is injected into the abdomen to create space for the surgery.
    • A laparoscope is inserted through the abdominal wall.
    • The uterus and cervix are removed without making large incisions.
    • The top portion of the vagina is sutured.

The entire procedure typically takes between one to three hours.

Hospital Stay

Patients are usually discharged on the same day or the next day following the surgery. Complete recovery from TLH generally takes around three to four weeks.

Post-Operative Care

Once home, the patient should:

  • Follow the doctor’s advice regarding bathing or showering.
  • Clean the incision area with mild soap and water if dissolvable stitches are used, which typically dissolve in about six weeks.
  • Use creams or ointments as recommended to relieve itching around the incision.
  • Gradually resume daily activities to ensure a smooth recovery.

By adhering to these guidelines, patients can recover efficiently and return to their normal routines with minimal complications.
